Question: What is KDP?

Answer: Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) is an Amazon platform that allows you to self-publish eBooks, paperbacks, and hardcover books for free. It gives you the option to expand your book’s availability on a global scale, making it more accessible to readers around the world. Publishing with KDP gives you full rights to your book, which traditional publishing houses don't typically allow.

You would need to set up an account to get started with publishing on KDP.

More information on how to set up a KDP account is covered in Day 1 of the 7-Day Publi$hing Challenge or in Module 2 if you are an AIA member.

Question: Can someone under 18 have a KDP account?

Answer: According to KDP's terms and conditions, you need to be 18 and above to have a KDP account.

Here's more information:

Article 4 - Account Eligibility and Registration

4.1 Eligibility. You must have an active Program account in order to participate. You represent that you are at least 18 years old (or the age of majority where you reside, whichever is older), and that you are able to form a legally binding contract. A parent or guardian of a minor can open a KDP account and be the Publisher of the minor’s Digital Book.

Question: What are the pros and cons of using a business name vs. a personal name for KDP?

Answer: Using a business name to create your KDP account can enhance the professionalism of your publishing efforts and allow for a consistent brand identity across various books and projects. However, it may involve additional steps, such as legal registration, and can be more complex to manage, particularly regarding accounting and taxes.

On the other hand, using a personal name is straightforward and doesn’t require extra legal paperwork or registration. It can create a more personal connection with readers (when also used as pen names), which can be beneficial for marketing. However, using your name directly links you to your published works and may lack the separation between personal and business assets.

With Publishing, both of these are valid options and it ultimately depends on your personal goals. If you are a beginner Publisher on a budget, go ahead and get started with your personal name/account.

Question: Can I publish a cookbook or coloring book using KDP?

Answer: Yes, you can publish a cookbook or coloring book using Amazon KDP.

We recommend using the same email address for all Amazon services, including KDP, for convenience.
